Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems – The Ultimate FAQ Guide

When you experience floor space challenges, product security, and tracking problems and you need to reduce forklift traffic and labor cost and improve your overall operational efficiency, then AS/RS should be considered.

The Automated Storage And Retrieval System stores and retrieve your materials with speed, accuracy, and precision.

This FAQ guide will help you know the Automated Storage And Retrieval System usage, components, specifications, advantages, price, and precautions.

1 – What is meant by Automated Storage And Retrieval System?

Automated Storage And Retrieval System, also called AS/RS, is a warehouse technology where products are automatically stored and retrieved back from the storage system as needed without direct labor involved in the process.

This is achieved by pairing the technology with warehouse execution software (WES), warehouse management software (WMS), or other controls that manage the process and help warehouse personnel process orders.

The AS/RS is specifically designed to buffer, store, and retrieve products and inventory on demand.

3 – Where Can You Use Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems?

Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems are used where:

      • A very high quantity of loads being moved into and out of storage
      • Storage density is important because of space constraints
      • Accuracy is important because of potential expensive damages to the load
      • AS/are used in a variety of industries, including Automotive, Beverage, Electronics, Food, Hazmat, Jewelry, Manufacturing, Maintenance & repair operations, Paper, Pharmaceuticals, Plastics, Spare parts handling, Warehousing, and distribution centers.

4 – How Can You Use Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems?

The Automated Storage And Retrieval System operate under computerized control. The computer determines wherein the storage area the item can be stored and retrieved.

Storage & retrieval machine (SRM) are used to move loads horizontally or vertically and can move laterally to deliver objects to the correct storage location.

For storing items, the pallet or tray is placed at an input station, the inventory information is entered into the computer terminal, and the SRM moves the load to the storage racks, determines a suitable location, and stores the load.

A system of conveyors or automated guided vehicles is sometimes part of the AS/RS. These take products into and out of the storage racks and move them to the manufacturing floor or loading docks.

As products are stored into or retrieved from the racks, the computer updates its inventory accordingly.

5 – What is Storage and Retrieval Machine In Automated Storage And Retrieval System?

Storage and Retrieval Machine (SRM) is sometimes called a crane that is capable of both horizontal and vertical movement.

SRM is used to deliver products from the input station into the storage location or retrieve/remove the stored products from the storage location and deliver them to the output station.

For performing these transactions, SRM consists of a rigid mast on which the elevator system is mounted for vertical movement of the carriage, and wheels are attached at the base of the mast for horizontal travel along with the rail system.

The carriage includes the shuttle mechanism to move loads into and from their storage compartments.

6 – Do the Automated Storage And Retrieval System Use Forklifts For Loading/Unloading The Products?

The Automated Storage And Retrieval System only operate under computerized control.

The Storage & Retrieval machine (SRM) is used to move loads horizontally or vertically to place them in the correct storage location.

The forklift trucks are only used to place the products on the input station where they are carried by the SRM to the storage location on the storage racks or remove the products from the output station.

7 – How Can You Store/Retrieve Products From The Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems?

The Automated Storage And Retrieval System totally operate under computerized control.

To store products in AS/RS, you should load the product on the pallet or tray that is placed at an input station by using a forklift truck.

The information for inventory is entered into a computer terminal, and the SRM moves the load to the storage area and determines a suitable location for the product, and then stores it.

Similarly, to unload a product, you must give information about the location of the product to the AS/RS, and then SRM automatically retrieve the product from that location and place it on the output station.

8 – Why The Automated Storage And Retrieval System Can Be Perfect For Your Warehouse Operations?

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems can increase the productivity and efficiency of your warehouse operations and make your business more profitable.

Automated storage and retrieval system allow you to reduce labor costs by replacing low-skilled labor with automation that also decreases the chances of any damage during the loading/unloading of the products.

Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems can help you better make use of your existing space, enabling higher and denser storage.

9 – What Is The Difference Between Conventional Storage System And Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems?

The Conventional Storage System and AS/RS have the following differences.

      • A conventional Storage System requires a human worker to store and retrieve the products from the storage system whereas, AS/RS requires computer instructions for this purpose.
      • Conventional Storage Systems require forklift trucks to load and unload the products, whereas, in AS/RS, Storage & retrieval machine (SRM) are used to move loads vertically or horizontally to place objects in the correct storage location.
      • Conventional Storage Systems are less dense than AS/RS.
      • Conventional Storage System has less accuracy, productivity, and efficiency than AS/RS.
      • Conventional Storage Systems require more labor costs than Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems.
      • Conventional Storage Systems require less initial investment than Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems.

      • Steel-framed vs. Rack-Supported Building
      • Available clear height in your facility

25 – Can Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems Save Your Time And Money?

Yes, the Automated Storage And Retrieval System save your operation time and cost due to the following reasons:

      • AS/RS technologies are more space-efficient than conventional storage and order fulfillment systems and require a much smaller footprint/square footage that results in lower construction and operating costs.
      • AS/RS must have to keep track of what products and quantities are stored in each location within the system that reduces the time for maintaining the record.
      • The system creates an environment that decreases expensive work-related injuries. That results in lower costs due to injury and employee turnover.
      • The AS/RShas lower training costs and allows new employees to be 100% productive in a shorter amount of time.
      • As there are no people working inside an Automated Storage and Retrieval System, there is no need for lighting that reduces labor costs and operational costs.
      • The lowest chance of inventory, picking, and shipping errors reduces the operational cost.

33 – What Should Be The Minimum Audit Time For Automated Storage And Retrieval Systems?

There is no way of knowing when a problem might arise in your AS/RS.

For that reason, it is normally recommended that an audit should be conducted at least once every 12 months.

The system should check out while running so that all moving parts can be observed. If a component is not performing correctly, repair or replacement will be recommended.

Additionally, if your AS/RS is more than ten years old, you have neglected preventative maintenance, your system is experiencing increased downtime, you should conduct an audit.
